An intercessory missionary is one who has committed to prayer and fasting as the first work of ministry with a view to establishing a prayer lifestyle that will help make outreach more anointed and effective for the churches in Northwest Arkansas. Intercessory missionaries are supported through financial support which they each raise.  An intercessory missionary is the modern day equivalent of a gatekeeper in the Tabernacle of David.

“These are the singers… who lodged in the chambers , and were free from other duties; for they work day and night.”  1 Ch 9:33

What is the purpose of an intercessory missionary?

Traditionally we think of missions as the “action side” of the Great Commission. There is also a “prayer side” to the fulfillment of the Great Commission. God is raising up missionaries who will express both of these dimensions that are necessary for the Great Harvest. In other words, God is establishing “intercessory missionaries.”

Continual prayer is essential and a requirement for us to see the full expression of God in our society.

Is there a Biblical basis for an intercessory missionary?

We see a picture of this type of lifestyle in Luke 2:36-38

“And there was a prophetess, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years and had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, and then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple, serving night and day with fastings and prayers. At that very moment she came up and began giving thanks to God, and continued to speak of Him to all those who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.”

Anna suffered the loss of her husband in her early 20’s. She dedicated herself to a lifestyle of prayer and fasting that lasted until Jesus was born. She proceeded to evangelize those around her with the good news of His coming. I believe God is calling many to the same activity as Anna. God is rearranging lives in all spheres of influence – from the stay-at-home-mom, to the college student, to the business man or woman – to make radical choices in order to give themselves to this calling in the grace of God.

Perhaps God is speaking to you about how you are to connect with night and day prayer.

How would an intercessory missionary contribute at Joppa House?

The main contribution would be prayer, of course. Intercessory missionaries allow the prayer room to be open for additional hours.

Does this have to be my full time vocation?

While an intercessory missionary is traditionally a full-time job, life may not allow this to happen. We do consider intercessory missionary on a part-time basis, as well.
