Who Are We

Joppa House: Who Are We?

Often times when people ask about Joppa, they say “What is it?” I want to reply, “manna”. In Exodus Chapter 16, the story of God providing a bread-like substance, we become acquainted with the word manna. The word manna is derived from the Hebrew word meaning, “what is it”? The Hebrews first words when they saw the bread-like substance was, “What is it?” I think when people who have not experienced Joppa House, they also say “manna”, “What is it?” The manna of Exodus was the “substance” of God’s provision. At Joppa House, the “substance” of His presence is Peace, Joy, & Love.

I have always loved the Exodus Story of God’s children being delivered from Egypt. We can so easily see times in our own lives where we found ourselves in bondage, yet out of nowhere it seems, God comes and delivers. In the process of deliverance is almost always a wilderness experience. The wilderness experience is not all so bad. Let’s not look at the side of the coin where the adults refused to trust God to take the promised land, rather let’s look at the side of the coin where God raised up a generation to trust Him for EVERYTHING! Is that what He is doing with you?

You and I are a people who, although we are blessed in our lives – food, clothing, shelter – even with that, something is lacking. No matter how much “God” we have in our life, it is not enough. Let’s look at the interaction between God & Moses. Take time to read Exodus 33 and notice that God was willing to give Moses what He asked.

This is Who We Are!

Exodus 33:13 Moses asked GodNow therefore, I pray You, if I have found favor in Your sight, let me know Your ways that I may know You, so that I may find favor in Your sight. Consider too, that this nation is Your people”.

  • This is who we are! We are a people like Moses who cry out for more of His presence. We are also a people who cry out in intercession for our nation.

Exodus 33:18-19a “Then Moses said, ‘I pray You, show me Your glory!’ And He said, “I Myself will make all My goodness pass before you…”

  • This is who we are! We are a people like Moses who long to see God, to experience His love, forgiveness, and presence. If Moses could ask, why not us?

Exodus 33:21 Then the Lord said, “Behold, there is a place by Me, and you shall stand there on the rock”

  • This is who we are! We are a people like Moses, who position ourselves for the presence of God. We want to see Him, as much of Him as we can. However much He is in our life, we will still want more!

Pursuing God

The interesting thing about the experience that Moses had with God is that Moses did not pursue God, God pursued Moses! Remember, Moses had run away, He was not even thinking about his God. God chased him down! God said “Now is the time”. Do you really think that we long for Him because of our great love for Him? Not a chance! We are pursuing God because He has first pursued us. We love Him because He first loved us. He has followed us around, waiting for that moment where He can impact us with His presence in such a way that we get a taste and we are hooked forever.

That is who we are! We are a people who have been chased down by God because He wants to visit His children. And all this time, we thought it was us pursuing His presence.

How about we sit still and let Him visit?
