Proverbs 22:6 Train up children in the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not depart from it.
I used to think that this scripture applied to my children only. I can’t tell you how many times Mary & I have stood on this verse as a promise of God for our children. It absolutely is one of the most powerful and comforting scriptures for a parent trying to raise a Godly child.
Departing for a Season
I was raised in the way I should go and I departed from that way for a season. However, while I was off being a prodigal son, I was never free from the influence of my Godly training. I didn’t know how to listen, because I was not taught as a child that God would speak to me. Even with that handicap, there was a voice inside calling me back. It was never a condemning voice. He was always compassionate, sometime warning, but always a voice meant to bring me back to the peace and presence of my Heavenly Father. One day, I gave in and have served God faithfully for 27 years now. The promise of Proverbs 22:6 was fulfilled for my parents who had continued to pray for me.
My children are his children
As my 3 children grew up, they faced adult challenges. God also fulfilled his promise to me as all 3 of my children are in a good place with God. If you are a parent that is struggling with your children, don’t give up. Have faith in God and He will see to it that your children return to Him. Sometimes we think we did not do enough training or we got started too late but remember, it is not all about you. Your children are not only yours but Gods also. They are His children and He is training them up as well, He never sleeps and He always knows what they need. Don’t you even sense Him still training you up even though you are an adult?
He still trains me
Here is the funny thing, I thought now I would not need that promise any longer. However, I realize that God is still developing me in Him based off the foundation of my childhood training. Even now when I am in a valley and want to run and quit; discouragement sets in and life seems hopeless, Holy Spirit takes me back to the foundation of my childhood. The foundation that God is good, that He is with me always, that He will deliver me, protect me & provide for me.
Luke 18:17 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”
He has never stopped treating me as a child. You and I are still & always will be children in His eyes. I understand that we are to grow to maturity but I have come to understand that this requires a lifetime to accomplish. If you were not raised in a Godly home with a Godly foundation from your childhood, just fall back on the foundation you received as an adult, you were still a child in His eyes. If you have no foundation right now, then He is calling you to start building one. It is not too late! There is a Kingdom that we are to pursue and this Kingdom belongs to God. We cannot lead ourselves into it, we cannot pray ourselves into it but we must be led into it by Holy Spirit.
Are you listening?
How is God leading you now? Are you responding to that inward voice that is speaking? He wants to take you somewhere, somewhere you have never been. You have only begun walking into what is available, no matter how far into His Kingdom you think you are. God is not through training His children in the way they should go.
Wherever you are in your walk with God, will you say yes to what He is saying to you now? Will you trust Him more than you trust yourself? Only if your answer is yes will you be able to truthfully declare someday that “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20
There is NO better way to live.
